After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree (with honors) in Chemistry from Princeton University, Dr. Rivers went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University Medical College in New York, N.Y. He followed his academic training with an internship in General Medicine at Beekman Downtown Hospital–New York Infirmary, a residency in Ophthalmology at the New York Hospital (Cornell Medical Center) and a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He also served as Chief Resident during his residency in Ophthalmology at the New York Hospital.

Dr. Rivers, who is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, holds licenses in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. and has affiliations at Georgetown University Hospital, Inova Fairfax and Fair Oaks Hospitals, and the Friendship Surgery Center. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Georgetown University School of Medicine’s Center for Sight and has been selected Clinical Instructor of the Year in the Department of Ophthalmology.

Research has always been a focal point of Dr. Rivers’ work in the field. He has been a principal investigator on two clinical studies, a sub-principal investigator on another and a participant in three additional research efforts. He has contributed to a variety of abstracts, presentations and published articles, and belongs to a number of professional societies and boards.
Dr. Rivers’ free time is spent with his wife and three children. His outside interests include bicycle trips, travel and photography (
